Exploring Birthstones: Amethyst

February 17, 2021

February sneaks up on us all some years. This year, the month has the pleasing quality of being an exact rectangle, beginning on a Monday and ending on a Sunday. Our shortest month, it often gets a little lost between the grandiosity of plans for the new year and the beginning of spring, but with a powerhouse of a birthstone, February can't be ignored.

Amethyst: February's birthstone

Amethyst is a type of quartz, ranging in color from pale pinkish lavender to a deep violet. When you see it uncut or unpolished, it looks much more like a geode than what you think of as a gemstone, like the gorgeous, 140 pound piece I found one year at the Tucson Gem Show. It can be cut to look like a traditionally faceted stone or polished into a smooth beadlike gem.

Healing properties of amethyst

A powerful protective stone, amethyst works with the body's immune system to strengthen the endocrine system and boost metabolism. A natural tranquilizer, it can calm the wearer from the inside out, easing tension, inflammation, and headaches. Some wearers find it eases migraines, though we always recommend crystals be used in conjunction with medical advice from your provider.

Emotional properties of amethyst

Amethyst works as both a tranquilizer and an amplifier for positivity, making it a strong spiritual talisman if you need to feel centered and loved. Not only does it help ease anxiety and tension, it can transform negative emotions into positive ones, increasing feelings of love and harmony for the wearer. The combination of properties makes amethyst one of the strongest balancing stones. Wearing it daily can help keep you on track to meet goals and make positive changes in your life in a calm and steady manner.

His and hers amethyst pieces

Though we try not to claim any of our jewelry as feminine or masculine, we find our buyers often gravitate towards certain pieces. Either way, we have two amethyst bracelets that highlight the beauty of the stone in different ways. The Bodyguard Bracelet is comprised of all amethyst stones, making it a strong, simple protective piece. The Lakers Bracelet was designed especially for Lakers fans but can be worn by anyone. The amethyst stone is offset by yellow jade and black agate. Both stones amplify courage and can be worn to bolster success.

Custom amethyst jewelry

One of the most unique pieces in the Jada Jo Collection contains amethyst. The Heart and Mind Necklace combines amethyst with malachite, a stone that absorbs negatives energies and opens the wearer's heart to unconditional love. The pendant on the necklace is a vintage calendar, and the 36-inch necklace can be twisted into a double strand necklace.

The Heart and Mind is one of a kind, and only one example of the creativity of our designers. Our Jada Jo team members are always willing to work with you to create a custom piece that suits your aesthetic vision and your spiritual needs.
