Exploring Birthstones: Red Garnet

January 13, 2021

Jada Jo Jewelry loves creating custom jewelry pieces for clients. Collaborating with people on meaningful jewelry allows us to connect more deeply with our community members. As the year begins, Jada wanted to introduce a new conversation — learning about birthstone jewelry. Some of our most common requests surround birthstone jewelry, and our designers love sharing what they know about each month's birthstone.

How did they decide birthstones?

Birthstone gems weren't chosen randomly — or recently. Birthstones go back thousands of years to Biblical times. The Bible itself tells the story of a special garment made for the High Priest, Aaron. The breastplate was adorned with 12 gemstones, each representing one of the 12 tribes of Israel.

At that time, colors were more important than the names of each stone. Over time, the gemstones came to represent the 12 signs of the Zodiac, then the 12 months of the calendar year.

Garnet: January's birthstone

January's birthstone is garnet. Sometimes called the Pomegranate gemstone, the deep red gem gleams richly, consistently reminding wearers of its presence. Like most red stones, the garnet stimulates the Root Chakra, though it also connects deeply to the Heart Chakra. Perfect for the beginning of the year, garnet works its positive energy in many areas of your life.

Healing properties of garnet

Physically, garnet purifies and encourages positive health by boosting the immune system. As a stone that stimulates the Root Chakra, garnet strengthens the body at a cellular level. It may stimulate the metabolism and help detoxify the body.

Emotional properties of garnet

The deep red garnet enhances courage and the power of positive thinking. It's the perfect January birthstone, as you begin a new year and take on new, sometimes challenging, goals and projects. Garnet inspires love and devotion, including passion and sensuality. In addition, garnet acts as a talisman for travelers, making it an important stone for those who love to explore the world.

Jada's favorite garnet jewelry

One of Jada's favorite garnet pieces is the Freedom Angel Necklace. The spiritual properties of garnet combined with the protective symbol of the angel wings makes the necklace a beautiful statement of love, strength, and protection.

Though garnet is January's birthstone, anyone can enjoy the aesthetic beauty and spiritual benefits of any birthstone. However, pay attention to the one corresponding to your birth month. Try wearing a bracelet like the Empress Garnet Bracelet or the Red Fortunate Hamsa Bracelet for a few weeks. You may find yourself balanced and strengthened by your birthstone, even enough to make it a signature stone! Do you own any red garnet?
